Co-Parenting and Communication

Co-parenting can have many rewards as well as many challenges.  When done well, it is a wonderful thing to see, when it doesn’t go well it can have detrimental consequences for the children.  There are many different ways to communicate with your co-parent, you may find some ways work well most of the time. It can be trial and error, especially in the early days.  Eventually, most co-parents find a middle ground that works for everyone, especially the children.

Effective tips 

2. Don’t communicate when upset and angry.  Wait until things are calmer.  

3. Be clear and concise on your purpose for communication.

4. Ask when is a good time to call, rather than just picking up the phone

5. Use email or text if verbal communication is difficult

6. Use a parenting app such a My Family Wizard or My Mob

7. Agree and commit to responding to communication in a timely manner

8. Lead by example with respectful and constructive communication (even if it not reciprocated) 

9. Never discuss issues in front of the children 

10. Use EAR statements and BIFF responses
